Prophetic Supplications: Uwais Qarani’s Supplication Taught by Imam Ali (PBUH)

Owais Qarani’s Supplication Taught by Imam Ali (PBUH)

Abu Abdullah al-Dinili reported, relating the hadith to Owais al-Qarani from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his household) said, “There is no servant who supplicates with this supplication except that Allah will respond to him.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) swore many times that if it were called upon flowing water, it would settle; and if a man supplicates with it while suffering from hunger and thirst, indeed, Allah would feed him and give him drink. If it were called upon a mountain to move from its place, it would move; and if it is recited for a woman who is experiencing difficulty in childbirth, Allah would make her childbirth easy. And if a man invokes with it in a city while the city is burning, and his house is in the middle of it, his house would be safe and would not burn. And if a man recites it/supplicates with it for forty nights during the nights of Friday, Allah would forgive him all the sins between him and the people. No distressed or worried person supplicates with it except that Allah relieves him, and no man prays with it against a tyrannical ruler except that Allah responds to him regarding it. [Sayed ibn Tawus says:] There is a long explanation, but we have summarized it here: the supplication is as follows:

In the name of Allah, the Absolute-Merciful in general, the Most Merciful to the faithful.

O Allah, indeed, I ask You and do not ask anyone other than You, and I turn to You and do not turn to anyone other than You. O Sanctuary of the fearful and refuge of those seeking shelter, You are the Supreme Opener/Solver, the Bestower of blessings, the One who forgives mistakes, the Eraser of evil deeds, the Recorder/Writer of good deeds, and the Exalter of ranks. I ask You with the best of all requests and the most successful of them, which is not appropriate for Your servants to ask You except through it. O Allah, O Most Merciful, and by Your beautiful names, and by Your highest attributes, and by Your blessings that cannot be counted, and by the most honorable of Your names to You, and the most beloved of them to You, and the most noble of them in Your sight, and the closest of them to You as a means, and the most generous of them in granting and the quickest of them in response from You.

And by Your Treasured, Glorious, Exalted, and Great name that You love and are pleased with, and You are pleased with those who call upon You with it, so You respond to their supplications, and it is right upon You not to deprive those who ask You, and by every name that is Yours in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Furqan, and by every name that is Yours, whether You have taught it to anyone of Your creation or not, and by every name by which Your Throne Bearers, Your angels, and Your chosen ones among Your creation have called You with, and by the right of those who ask You and turn to You, and those who seek refuge in You and humbly plead before You, and by the right of every devoted servant to You on land or sea or plain or mountain.

I supplicate to You with the supplication of one whose need has intensified, whose crime is great, who is on the brink of destruction, whose strength has weakened, and who trusts in nothing of his deeds, and finds no one to forgive his sin except You, and no one to appreciate his effort but You.
